Our Story

There is no doubt that water is a scarce and precious resource.

Water is used in many manufacturing processes and accounts for over 20% of human freshwater use. This water must be treated. Industrial water treatment has been seen as a mystery with no one taking the initiative to innovate the technology and business model that serves that market.

This is where Buckman Digital Water comes in. We are in a unique position to innovate the industrial water treatment business model by using digital to disrupt the status quo. To help system owners achieve their goals, we developed a unique digital-chemical approach that provides water treatment clarity through data based on outcomes with spend and usage transparency. Our actionable insights help system owners improve the efficiency of their water system by optimizing chemical and water use, while minimizing downtime and extending asset life.

We feel that expanding water treatment intelligence to more people will create positive environmental impact and lasting change. Our digi-chem solutions will democratize water treatment through a collaborative network of water treatment and service providers. Leveraging a wide network of partners will bring rapid disruption to the industrial water treatment industry and serve more facilities and industries.

The Buckman Legacy: a long history of innovation

Back in 1945 Dr. Stanley J. Buckman, a biochemist from Memphis, Tennessee, introduced paper mills to biocides, an innovative chemical solution that provided an alternative to shutting down to clean their machines. These biocides saved thousands of gallons of water from being used. Applying Dr. Buckman’s chemistry saved the paper mills time and money. That biocide was the first of many, and Buckman Laboratories was born on an old lumberyard in Memphis, with a single 50-gallon reactor and a team of five.

Today, Buckman is still producing the biocide BSM-11 for the pulp and paper industry. Our innovation journey has not only taken us to new industries but has expanded to include digital solutions that help simplify process management for our customers. In fact, in 1989, Buckman was the first in the industry to provide employees with their own laptops, fostering a culture of early digital communication and knowledge sharing.
